How it all began

The summer of ‘76. America celebrated its bicentennial. FM radio rocked “The Boys Are Back in Town.” And at the Balboa Fun Zone on the bay in Newport Beach, California, teenage brothers Mike and Mitch Hurwitz rented and renovated an old taco stand and opened “The Chipyard.” Locals and tourists were drawn in by the aroma of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. Word got out that the cookies were the real deal, the local press took notice, and within a few weeks the teens were selling cookies by the thousands to lined up beachgoers. The next summer their dad Mark expanded the business eastward and opened the Boston Chipyard at the newly restored Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Mike and Mitch continued to run the Chipyard at the beach throughout high school and during summers home from college. Both grew up to find success beyond the Chipyard – Mike fulfilled his childhood dream to become a surgeon, and Mitch created the critically acclaimed TV series Arrested Development. Forty-six years later, the Boston Chipyard carries on the family tradition with award-winning chocolate chip cookies at the tastiest stop on the Freedom Trail. Bostonians and visitors love our cookies hot from the oven. Visit us at Faneuil Hall, or experience a taste of our nation’s history with cookies from our Founding Brothers shipped to your door.
